Morning Update (Tribe Edition)

  • There are tons and tons of mock drafts, listed by date, at NFL Mocks.

  • What ultimate reward do you get for using up each ticket in your season ticket allotment? A hat.

  • Part two of WPI's interview with Jared Allen is definitely more interesting than the first. It's worth the read.

  • Found a new Chiefs blog.

  • Check out another good rundown of the Chiefs OC search so far.

  • Big Cat Country has the key matchup in this weekend's Jaguars/Patriots playoff game.

  • Matt from The Phinsider has his first mock draft up.

  • Want to beat the Chiefs? Run the bootleg.

  • Chicago Vice? How did the '85 Bears manage to attach themselves to every fad?
Speaking of classic sports posters, does anyone have/remember the Chiefs poster where every player was dressed up like a Native American? The tribe poster if you will. Some had headdresses on. It was truly one of the most politically incorrect (nowadays anyway) sports posters I've ever seen.

Google image search is coming up empty for this poster. Does anyone remember what I'm talking about?

I remember that poster...
...and you're right -- it was awful.

The worst part is that I think it came out in the late 80s (I'm pretty sure Dino Hackett was on it).  To add more insult to injury, as I recall each of the players on it had a nickname like "Chief Crazy Horse" or some such.

Hold up...
Politically incorrect does not equal awful.  That was just back from America's golden era where we weren't all a bunch of pussies complaining about being offended.
I had that poster as a kid and loved it.  I think it was issued around '90 or '91.

America's "Golden Age?" Really?
I thought it was awful and offensive.  It has nothing to do with being overly sensitive.  What if we had all of our white players get done up in blackface, or outfit themselves as Asians?

I'm also probably the only fan who wishes the damn "tomahawk chop" would go away.  Such is my opinion.

You might be the only one
But, you have to look at the intent of it.  It's meant to get the fans excited, it's our call for our team, not a way to discriminate.

by primetime 07 on Jan 11, 2008 1:40 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

No
you have to consider the impact of it not the intent.  If I call you a name that bugs the ***t out of you should I be able to continue because I know how I really meant it?

by Halfbreed5050 on Jan 11, 2008 1:57 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

The impact?
Pretty much nothing.  Not enough Chiefs fans have complained about it that would warrant any action from the organization.

Money speaks.  It's a promotional tool.

Florida State
has the full support of the Seminole tribe and the tribe goes to great lengths to ensure their tribe is accuratly portrayed.  The notion that every Native American is up-in-arms and lossing sleep over the chop, or a team being named the Chiefs is simply false.
Further, the "what if they were in blackface or dressed up like Asians" doesn't makes sense.  The players were dressed up to reflect the team they play for.  The team isn't named the Slaves or the Kamakazi Pilots, they played for the Chiefs.  Lat I don't see how being a Chief is derogitory, doesn't that show status?  We're not talking about the Redskins here.

I'm Northern Cheyenne
Born and raised on the rez.  I don't have a problem with the Chiefs calling themselves Chiefs but, when they start donning traditional garments to promote themselves and using names of our respected ancestors for the same purpose then yes, I have a problem with that!

by Halfbreed5050 on Jan 11, 2008 2:56 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Exactly.
And thank you for the clarification.

Mock Drafts
a lot of them have us taking a QB...do any of you actually think this will happen?  I would be very surprised if we did.  Regardless of your personal feelings on Croyle, do you see Edwards bailing on him already?

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 11, 2008 9:09 AM CST   0 recs

Nope
I don't think happens. Herm has made it pretty clear that Croyle is our guy and when the leading candidates for your OC position coached Croyle in college, you can bet the Chiefs will give him a chance to develop.

Hali
a few of the drafts also had us taking DE Long...What are your thoughts on that?  After Hali recovered from his nagging injuries in the first half of the season, I thought he picked it up pretty well...I would like to give him another year to see if he is a 10+ sack guy (personally I think he can do it in 2008), drafting another 1st round DE would mean that Herm's first pick for the Chiefs would be a backup and that would hurt.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 11, 2008 10:04 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Could be...
Hedging on Jared Allen jumping ship.

by Bill Grigsbys Cirrhosis on Jan 11, 2008 10:09 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Keep Jared
He's a sure thing.  Long could turn out to be a bust.  Why take the risk?  You would be committing more money to Long either way.

Now if we trade Jared somehow for another first round pick, I wouldn't mind taking Long and an offensive lineman.

by primetime 07 on Jan 11, 2008 10:15 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Not gonna happen
nor do I want it to...Allen is entering the prime of his career, and it will be with the Chiefs.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 11, 2008 10:57 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

He made it pretty clear...
Last offseason that he was done with the Chiefs after they wouldn't sign him to a longterm deal.  What makes up think he'll sign with Carl?

by Bill Grigsbys Cirrhosis on Jan 11, 2008 11:03 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Because
Carl already said that no way would they let Allen slip away and if it took them too long to negotiate a long term contract, they would franchise him for a year to give them another year to work on that contract.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 11, 2008 11:13 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I hope thats true...
but if they take a DE early I think its because they don't expect to keep him.

by Bill Grigsbys Cirrhosis on Jan 11, 2008 1:10 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Off Topic
Kinda local.

This must be embarassing.

SLU basketball, under new coach Rick Majerus, scores a record low 20 points last night.

Wow.

Meanwhile, back in KC HS b-ball...
...the Barstow Knights are 7-1 this season!  Woo!

Signed,
Proud Sister of a Varsity Player

Boschee?
Isn't Jeff Boschee coaching them??  Or am I thinking of someone else?
