Why Hasn't Larry Johnson Been Put on Injured Reserve?

NFL.com

Just a few minutes before Brett Favre and Greg Jennings sucked the air out of Arrowhead Stadium and the Chiefs season, linebacker A.J. Hawk tackled Larry Johnson on a short pass to the left side of the field. Both players twisted awkwardly as they fell to the ground. Two went down. One got up.

Larry Johnson left Arrowhead that day with what was initially called a mid-foot sprain. Since then, the Chiefs have lost six straight games and have put two backup players on the injured reserve list, center Rudy Niswanger and quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

For a couple of weeks after the initial injury, we wondered if Larry would require season-ending surgery on his foot. Turns out he didn't. Larry himself reassured us he'd be back but he wasn't sure when.

Six weeks later and each week we've been fed the same line about Larry and his status.

"He's getting rehab, is going to be out this week. Feeling a little better."

The Chiefs have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Playing Larry at this point in the season would be fruitless and potentially dangerous, considering the obvious severity of his foot injury and the obvious weaknesses of our offensive line. Missing six games already and having the season dissolve during that time are two more reasons to sit LJ for the rest of the season. Herm Edwards has said Larry hasn't been put on IR because coming back for a game or two would do good things for Larry's confidence.

Priest Holmes is gone, Kolby Smith is nicked up and we have another running back waiting in the wings on the practice squad. With such an emphasis on youth and competition by our head coach, why is Larry Johnson taking up a valuable roster spot with only three games remaining in the season?

Is putting Larry on IR an admission by Herm Edwards that he overworked the Pro-Bowl runner last season?

Is the Chiefs' brass miffed about a source within the organization leaking information before they were ready to release it? Do they not want to give credence to that report?

Is Larry Johnson looking to leave Kansas City after this season and doesn't want to admit the severity of his injury? Larry did sign a massive contract this past offseason but the Chiefs future can't seem very bright in his eyes.

Or is Larry Johnson really on the verge of coming back, with Larry himself insisting to the coaching staff that he'll return?

I'll throw my speculation out there. It's simple. I think that the Chiefs don't want to add another disappointing storyline to the 2007 season. With Larry still on the active roster, there's still technically hope that he'll return and that this team isn't totally broken. "Injured reserve" has such a nice, contrite way of relaying information to fans. You hear "injured reserve" and your immediate thought is, "Season over". Putting LJ on injured reserve is an official action by the organization that would bring that much more attention to one of the worst seasons the Chiefs have experienced in twenty years. Better to let the story fade as the season ends than make a public declaration.

In relation to the local media, the Kansas City Chiefs are like a bully with low-self esteem. They won't take the high road, as evidenced by the repeated jabs given to Jason Whitlock, sports talk radio hosts and The Kansas City Star on KCChiefs.com. They even have an anonymous writer, "Rufus Dawes", who refutes the biggest criticisms of the week sent in by fans. The Chiefs have chosen a strategy of actively defending themselves against the local media and the lack of information about Larry Johnson is another battle in that fight.

The Chiefs are going to keep their mouth shut on the Larry Johnson injury issue and frankly, I don't think they care if we want to know or not.

I think
they are gonna put LJ out there for trade bait. They did it last season why not do it again? Could they possibly be trying to work out an injury settlement? Could they know his football career is over? Only one other player has returned from this injury and it is Ty Law, we see how he is now.

How dare you
say that Herm could have possibly handled this situation badly! Coaches coach! Players play! And LJ's not playing! When he can play, he'll play!

You want to blame Herm Edwards so quick, why not blame the players? What about Eddie Kennison? Is he over there, rubbing LJ's foot? No! Is DJ getting him a fresh Fresca with lime? No!

These things happen. Your franchise running back holds out for the majority of the preseason, performs horribly in the regular season, then gets injured and mysteriously is questionable for the game for 6 weeks, while you go in the tank and you don't put him on IR, all of this after giving him the largest contract in Chiefs' history. They happen to all teams. Get over it.

Mawk
do you think there are any reasonable questions there? I will try with all my might to (get over it) as you run our proud franchise in the ground thats life.

I know
know you were being sarcastic, but I was just curious if I was the only one who had thoughts along those lines. Keep up the sarcasm it's great!

The LJ
thing has pissed me off from start to finish. I don't mind him holding out for more money. I mind him holding out for more money than LT. I don't blame him for struggling behind the O-Line. I blame him for costing us in penalties and acting like a child about it, all while not looking like he's trying at all.

I don't blame him for getting injured. I blame Herm for not sticking him on IR after the 2nd loss. There's a point where you have to shut him down.

I don't have any problem with the front office not saying it's a rebuilding year. I have a problem with them not being honest about the extent of his injury. Just telling me, "hes' not going to play, you don't need to worry about it" is an insult to my intelligence as a fan.

And the fact that he's in NY during all of this partying it up with millions made off the backs of Chiefs fans while Kolby Smith does a better job blocking makes me livid.

That is
why I believe Kolby is the more rounded back, when Kolby flipped the blitz ing linebacker my first thought LJ would never put forth that much effort. The only time I seen LJ try to block he jumped out in front of the guy and threw his hands up like he was on a roller coaster.

I just did some salary comparisons
for another post, I note that TG and LJ are far and away the highest paid players on the Chiefs.

Interestingly enough, TG in my opnion, earns his money every week by making great plays, catching balls and not coughing them up and blocking, yes blocking when he needs to.

LJ makes almost 2 million more than TG and has done what for it?

And, before we blame the Oline, (though they have things to answer for themselves ) let's watch that ROOKIE Kolby run for 150+ yards again behind the SAME Oline LJ could barely get any behind.

That is
why I think the Chiefs should cut their losses at nineteen million say thank you, but no thank you for being with the Chiefs for five years. That pays him for being abused by Edwards, all his yards ,and TD'S. aND WE CAN DEVELOP A LESS SELFISH BACK.
