Best and Worst of the SB Nation Mock Draft

Thanks to Big Blue Shoe at Stampede Blue for this write up-- Chris

The votes are in for the Best and Worst of the 2007 SB Nation Mock Draft. Thanks to all for participating. And now for the results:

Best Draft: Houston Texans (Tim at Battle Red Blog)

You got the sense that when everyone agreed to trades in this mock draft, Tim’s eyes lit up; because oh brother did this guy wheel and deal. When all was said and done, he took a 1st round pick and a 3rd round pick and turned them into a 1st, 2nd, and two 3rd round picks. He managed to address the #1 issue for the Texans (o-line) by snagged OT Joe Staley with the #21 pick and he caught WR Jason Hill in the third round. Very impressive. Tim knew what his team needed and wanted, and he went out and got them. Bravo!

Worst Draft: Seattle Seahawks (Shrug at Field Gulls)

That’s right, cats and kittens! Our host for the draft had the worst mock draft of all of us. Man, does he suck! I mean, he sucks harder than a Thai hooker during Fleet week. He is so bad he… oh, who am I kidding. Literally everyone that voted had a different selection for worst. Some even voted THEMSELVES as the worst. The only reason Shrug falls here is he really, really wanted a first round pick, but couldn’t swing a trade to do it despite interest in WR Darrell Jackson. Teams like the Colts and 49ers were involved in such trade talks, but as usual everything BigBlueShoe touches turns to ashes and dust. When Shrug’s picks did comes up, he drafted a questionable RB (Michael Bush) and a DT (Paul Soliai) that some think was a reach. Again, in fairness, the draft is especially tough this year for Seattle, and Shrug was in a no win situation. However, since we are all brutal, savage sports bloggers who spit on weakness and mock futility, we will place Shrug in the Worst Mock Draft of 2007 category because we are evil I tell you… EEEEEEEEEEEEVIL!

Steal of the Draft: Jon Beason (LB) drafted by Kirkendall at Cincy Jungle

Jon Beason is listed in just about every mock draft as a mid-late first round pick. Beason fell in our mock draft all the way to pick #49. With so many loses at the LBer position for the Bengals, finding Beason there at pick #49 was a coup. Kirkendall entertained offers to trade Beason for additional picks later in the draft, but instead decided wisely to keep him. Beason might be the second best linebacker in the draft, and to get him in the mid-second round was the steal of this mock draft.

Biggest Reach: Eric Weddle (S) drafted by Tommasse at Pats Pulpit

This was near unanimous. Weddle is projected by many as a third round pick. Tommasse drafted him with New England’s #24 pick, bypassing better safeties like Michael Griffin or a corner like Chris Houston. To be fair, Tommasse was not the only mock drafter to think Weddle would get picked early, and the whole point of this mock draft was to act the way your team’s GM would act on draft day. It seems, with that in mind, Tommasse did his job, but that was not enough for the voters. Tommasse’s reasoning for taking Weddle was a Belichick guy, and that with no second round pick, it was likely Weddle would be gone by the time New England drafted again. The problem with this is New England picked again just four picks later, at #28. At #28, Tommasse selected OG Ben Grubbs. It would have made more sense to take Grubbs at #24 and then Weddle at #28. Because Weddle is drafted at #24, he must be paid first round money… more money than Grubbs, Houston, and others drafted after him (which to many makes no sense). The bottom line here is if safety was the "need," Michael Griffin was a better option. If Weddle was New England’s target, a trade was necessary. Many teams would have traded second and third round picks for the #24th overall (maybe even Tim at Battle Red Blog). Again, in fairness, Tommasse isn’t the only one saying Weddle will go early. And even though the "experts" say Griffin is a better safety, the "experts" also said Ryan Leaf was going to be a great QB in 1998. You can read Tommasse's reasoning for picking Weddle here.

There you have it, the Best and Worst of the 2007 SB Nation Mock Draft. We SB Nation football bloggers hope you enjoyed this little experiment on our part. Very few community sports blogs can manage to get their writers to do a one round mock draft. We squeezed three rounds out of our writers, and painted a very unique picture of what the draft could be. This draft was organized by the taskmaster himself, SkinsPatrol at Hogs Haven, and hosted by Shrug at Field Gulls. SeanYuille at POD provided excellent charts for tracking the mock draft, especially in the later rounds. TheSportsGuru, JasonB, BrianG, and Grizz helped a great deal in organizing things when SkinsPatrol was busy yelling at people to get their damn picks in. BigBlueShoe wrote the Best and Worst thread. Special thanks to the LSU college bloggers at And The Valley Shook for drafting the New Orleans Saints for us and to our guest Arizona Cardinals blogger for drafting the for desert red birds. Thanks to all that helped and everyone that participated. If you weren’t named, it is BigBlueShoe’s fault, and you can go on hating him per usual. Has the season started yet? Because it sure feels like it!

And With the 84th Pick in the SB Nation Mock Draft...

The Kansas City Chiefs select Marcus Thomas, DT from Florida. Let the Ryan Sims comparisons begin. I have to confess that my draft knowledge doesn't really extend into the 3rd round. I just haven't done enough analysis to make a true pick by myself. Thats why you're here. Employing the help of iguy2000 and thatswhatshesaid, I finally settled on Marcus Thomas, a great talent at Florida who missed part of his senior season because he tested posititive for marijuana. I believe this to be a pretty good case of the Chiefs getting what is probably a second round talent late because of Thomas' off the field issues.

Scout seems to have summed it up best:

Possessing first-round physical skills, Thomas offers starting potential at the next level if he makes football a top priority and stays clean off the field.

Now before you tear into me for drafting a player with character issues, lets make it clear that Marcus Thomas is not some sort of animal. He was not convicted of rape or assault or disorderly conduct. Like he said himself, he made a mistake at a party. Read his open letter to Gator fans here.

Now back to why we chose a DT. Despite signing Alfonso Boone and resigning James Reed, Ron Edwards and Jimmy Wilkerson, how confident are you? Me? Not very. Marcus Thomas is a good value pick up and has already made his mistakes in college. He's 6-3, 314 pounds so size isn't really an issue with him. Still not convinced? Here's a little anecdotal evidence from his wiki page:

Prior to the game against LSU when he was on suspension, the Vegas Line was -1 in favor of LSU. After he was activated for the game, the Vegas Line was +3 in favor of Florida.
Somewhat of a risky pick I know. I was leaning towards a CB before iguy2000 let me know about Marcus Thomas. So...thoughts on why or why not Marcus Thomas was a good pick here?

Mock Draft Tracker Update #11

The Sports Brief

Meachem is my favorite receiver in the draft besides Johnson. He has good size, (6'2, 214) and he's fast, (4.39 40.) Tony Gonzalez is great, but one of the main reasons he's always the team's leading receiver is because they don't have anyone else. Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker won't get it done, again. Meachem would be perfect if he falls, even Bowe, Jarrett, Rice would be an improvement on what they have.

Tennessee Journalist
Cliff- At some point the Chiefs have to get someone other than Tony Gonzalez to throw the ball to. You'd have to think they'd snatch up Meachem should he fall to them.

Mike: Meachem in Kansas City would be a good fit, and he could be a sleeper when it comes to Fantasy Football with the Chiefs having both Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez.

Comcast Sports Net
The Chiefs lost the heart and soul of their O-line this past week when guard Will Shields retired. With only Chris Bober their as a replacement, Kansas City needs to find a long-term solution. Grubbs is as athletic as you can get for a guard. He's capable of starting immediately and should pick up where Shields left off. Not a glamorous pick, but when your bread and butter is the running game, you can't afford to be sexy here.

Gosselin's Mock Draft
Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan; Comment: Chiefs struggled in 2006 without LT Willie Roaf

Bleacher Report
The Chiefs will be ecstatic if they can select this tackle from Louisville. Okoye, the youngest player in the draft, is an impact defensive lineman and could probably start immediately in K.C.

Yahoo! Sports
Head coach Herm Edwards has stated several times that he believes their receiving corps has much better depth than outsiders currently think. If that is indeed the case, the next biggest area of concern is finding an interior defender that can actually make plays. Harrell has returned to his former first-round status thanks to proving he is 100 percent healthy (31 bench reps of 225 pounds) and teams have grown very fond of his toughness and motor.
Position
Tally
First Round Choice
WR
55 Dwayne Bowe (21) Sidney Rice (10) Ted Ginn Jr. (4) Robert Meachem (12) Dwayne Jarrett (8)
OT
9 Levi Brown (3) Tony Ugoh (2) Joe Staley (4)

3 Leon Hall (1) Aaron Ross (1) Chris Houston (1)
LB
1 Patrick Willis (1)
DT
5 Amobi Okoye (3) Justin Harrell (2)
OG
2 Ben Grubbs (2)

Grubbs and Meachem picked up a few more votes and Grubbs seems to be the trendy Chiefs pick of the week. One position you don't see on the mock draft tracker is running back. Why did 4 running backs work out for the Chiefs last week then? Smoke screen baby. Carl Peterson wants the Chiefs draft day decisions to be completely up in the air. If this is the case, I'm hoping to see some pretty shrewd moves come this weekend from the Chiefs brass. Trading down is one possibility and may be the most logical one in our case. With the #23 pick in the first round, in a sense we are probably going to be screwed with whatever pick we get. Not screwed in terms of the talent we get but we will more than likely pick a guy who isn't necessarily first round material. And because of our second round pick at #54, we again will watch much needed players pass us up. The solution appears to be to trade our pick. To who? I don't know. For what? I don't know either. That will become clearer as the week goes on.

**UPDATE** The SB Nation Mock Draft is into the 3rd round and we need to make a decision. This will be the final round of the SB Nation Mock Draft so lets make this pick as soon as possible. Possibilities include...not quite sure yet. Draft Tek has some insight so check it out and let me know what you think.

Mock Draft Tracker Update #10

Swerb's Mock Draft

OG Ben Grubbs, Auburn

The Chiefs badly need a WR, but the drop off from what is available here versus what will be there at #54 for them isn't great. The Chiefs OL has slipped from its level of sustained dominance as of late, and Will Shields just retired. Grubbs can step right in for him as the drafts top offensive guard.

Arrowhead Addict
Considering that I can't remember the last time the Chiefs had a true number one WR, I have to roll with Jarrett this late in the first. Scouts may not have blown smoke off their stopwatches when he ran his 40, but he has great size and his college resume is impeccable. Come on, he didn't become the Pac-10's all-time leader in touchdown receptions by accident. I'm aware of the Mike Williams comparisons, but I'm predicting a career that more closely resembles another ex-Trojan's -- Keyshawn Johnson.

Lucky Lester
I like Bowe. In fact, I think the kid is a flat out steal here. He's going to be a top receiver in this league. He's not afraid to do anything. He's big, fast, strong, and he'll go get the ball from a defender if you just give him a chance. The Chiefs will find it tough to pass on Ted Ginn Jr., and if I were a betting man, I'd keep my money out of this one, but I think Bowe is the better fit for KC.

Dawg Bones
Dwayne Bowe. How long have we been saying that the Chiefs need a receiver? Too long.

NFL Answers
Robert Meachem. It is really about time the Chiefs find a go-to wide receiver. When Eddie Kennison and Johnnie Morton are your best receivers within the last five years you have problems.

Mell-O's Mock Draft likes Ted Ginn Jr.

NFL DraftMock likes Robert Meachem.

Great Blue Draft likes Dwayne Jarrett.

On the Bubble likes Robert Meachem as well.

Position

I get the impression from around the blogosphere that everyone thinks the Chiefs are going to take a WR but within the Chiefs community, there is no consensus on a WR. We can chalk this up to stubbornness on the part of Chiefs fans or lack of intimate knowledge on the part of all of these mock drafters. Regardless, the mock draft tracker continues to rack up the tallies for a WR in the first round. Bowe, Meachem and Jarrett all added to their numbers in this update. Lets start using these Mock Draft Tracker threads to talk about what we think the Chiefs will actually do, as opposed to what we think they should do. Herm is going defense I'm guessing. The guy is stubborn and likes his methods.

And with the 54th Pick in the SB Nation Mock Draft...

The Kansas City Chiefs select Doug Free, offensive tackle from Northern Illinois. Enter the second round, where names are less familiar and the choices are more controversial. Arrowhead Pride made this pick because, well, we just had a 15 year Hall of Fame offensive lineman retire and we'd like to hopefully rebuild what was the greatest offensive line of the century (21st that is).

Doug Free's durability is one thing that got my attention. Since his first start as a freshman, Free was able to rack up 49 consecutive starts for the Huskies. Free has definite potential to be a fantastic tackle with his size, athleticism and durability. His college coach Joe Novak said:

No question, Doug has the talent to play on Sundays. Knock on wood, I believe he's going to be a first-round draft pick. Doug Free's a lot better athlete than Ryan Diem. (Free) can run! You just don't see many offensive linemen that can run at that size like he can. What's impressive is he'll sit back in pass protection and then we'll throw the ball down the field and he'll run down field and block a safety. I mean, get downfield! You just don't see kids who can do that. He's special. Our kids call him 'Doug Freak' because he runs so well.

As one elite offensive lineman leaves, we welcome another hopeful into the ranks. Keep checking out Field Gulls for mock draft updates.

Round 2 of the SB Nation Mock Draft

The Kansas City Chiefs pick is coming up in Round 2 of the SB Nation Mock Draft. Field Gulls is in the process of putting up the second round picks. Here are the second round picks so far (copied straight from my email of course):

  • 1(33) Oakland Raiders -- Zach Miller, TE(ASU)

  • 2(34) Detroit Lions -- Marcus McCauley, CB(Fresno St)

  • 3(35) Tampa Bay Bucs -- Buster Davis, LB(Florida St)

  • 4(36) Cleveland Browns -- Ryan Kalil, C(USC)

  • 5(37) Chicago Bears -- Michael Griffin, S(Texas)

  • 6(38) Arizona Cardinals -- Brandon Meriweather, S(Miami)

  • 7(39) Atlanta Falcons -- Tony Ugoh, OL(Arkansas)

  • 8(40) Miami Dolphins -- Arron Sears, OT(Tennessee)

  • 9(41) Minnesota Vikings -- Anthony Gonzalez, WR(Ohio State)

  • 10(42) San Francisco 49'ers -- Sidney Rice, WR(South Carolina)

  • 11(43) Buffalo Bills -- Antonio Pittman, RB(Ohio State)

  • 12(44) Atlanta Falcons -- Charles Johnson, DE(Georgia)

  • 13(45) Carolina Panthers -- Brandon Siler, LB(Florida)

  • 14(46) Pittsburgh Steelers -- Anthony Spencer, DE(Purdue)

  • 15(47) Green Bay Packers -- Tanard Jackson, CB(Syracuse)

  • 16(48) Jacksonville Jaguars -- Tim Crowder, DE(Texas)

  • 17(49) Cincinnati Bengals -- Jon Beason, LB(Miami)

  • 18(50) Tennessee Titans -- Josh Wilson, CB(Maryland)

  • 19(51) New York Giants - Eric Wright, CB(UNLV)

St. Louis and Dallas pick before us. The names that immediately jump out at me that are already gone are Tony Ugoh and Arron Sears, the two remaining upper tier tackles that were left on the board. Which pushes me in the direction grabbing a defensive tackle. Of the remaining upper tier DTs, there is Tank Tyler and Turk McBride. Take note of the remaining WRs in our mock draft, which aren't really many at all. I think that is a good indication of what WR will be available in the second round, for those advocating a second round WR selection. Let me know if I missed anyone and hopefully we can resolve AP's pick for the second round today.

And I'm still waiting for the first jackass to say on the poll that Will Shields isn't a Hall of Famer.

And with the 23rd Pick in the Draft...

The Kansas City Chiefs select Ted Ginn Jr. from Ohio State.

In 2007, the Chiefs main areas of need are wide receiver, defensive tackle and the offensive line. We got a left tackle from the Dolphins, a defensive lineman from the Bears and a slew of linebacker free agent pickups. It was unlikely we were going to make any moves in the off season for a WR so the draft was the most logical place to address this need.

Arrowhead Pride chose Ted Ginn Jr because first and foremost, I was surprised he was still around. Most mock drafts had him going in the middle of the 1st round and only a couple projected that the Chiefs would actually pick him up. Our Mock Draft Tracker showed the majority of mock drafts having us taking a wide receiver, with Dwayne Bowe receiving the most picks. I casually had it in the back of my mind that if Ted Ginn Jr. did fall to us, we had to take him.

He is explosive and as dangerous a player as any that the Chiefs have had in the last few years. His only drawback may be his size as he is listed as 6 ft even. But Ginn makes up for that in the special teams department. Ever since Dante Hall started to run backwards on kick returns, the Chiefs have had a void at a position that arguably won them 4 games in 2003. Ginn brings that game changing ability back to the Chiefs special teams.

I mentioned this yesterday on AP but I really like the idea of pairing up Brodie Croyle with a young wideout. The Chiefs have lacked a great QB to WR combo for most of their franchise history. I would love to see Croyle and Ginn develop into a deadly passing combo. Am I wishing for too much? Eh, probably but the potential is definitely there. We got ourselves a play maker and our aging offense will appreciate it.

I have a feeling this will generate some controversy and some good conversation. Head over to Field Gulls for coverage of the SB Nation NFL Mock Draft.
